Erin N. Fischer - About Me

My name is Erin N. Fischer. I am a 30 something computer programmer by trade and it is also one of my hobbies.

In 2001, my ex and I built a house in St. Jacob, IL on 18 acres we bought back in 1998. It is about half woods and half farmland. We wanted to get away from the suburbs, but they are following us. Luckily behind our property is wetlands that flood each rain and houses on acreage all around us, so we should be safe for now (of course this does not matter so much to me now that we split and I returned to civilization in February 2008).

I love most kinds of music, and even play guitar and created loop-based (Sony Acid Studio/Adobe Audition) music. I love to read fiction (especially short fiction), mostly horror, but I pretty much like all fiction.  I read lots of non-fiction also (history, science, gender studies, etc). I write short stories in my occasional spare time (and have a novel I have been adding to for several years) and hope someday to get some of my work published. I also dabble in making computer generated art in various tools (photoshop, after effects, illustrator, bryce, cararra, etc).

The ex and I have four dogs (greyhound, miniature schnauzer, rat terrier, and a boxer) who we have rescued from shelters, pounds and through rescue-groups over the years.

Drusilla
06/15/2004 - 08/25/2007

On Saturday, 8/26/2007, we had to have Drusilla (Dru) our labradoodle put to sleep. What started out as a urinary tract infection spread to a kidney infection which then got into her bloodstream and started causing neurological damage. We had taken her in the morning after being diagnosed with UTI (Thursday) because she still would not eat (had been 2 days at this point). They started her on IV feeding and antibiotics. Tests at that point showed compromised kidney function. By the next day, kidney values were back to normal but she was still in much discomfort and not eating. The next morning (Saturday) we went in to check on her and she was still in bad shape and not eating, but the vet said we should give her more time. I said I would let them monitor her until Monday, but if at that point there was no improvement, we should stop her suffering. 4 hours later we got a call that we needed to get there right away.

We rescued her from Metro East Humane Society in December of 2005. Despite being stronger than all the other dogs, she never grew angry or hurt them no matter how much they might annoy her. She was also very protective of them (even against me when I was antagonizing them). She and our boxer, Zoe, would run laps in the back yard and wrestle back and forth all the time. She loved to play and would often try to collect all the toys from throughout the house. When we would go to bed, she was always happiest snuggled up against us. She was my special baby and I will miss her very much.
